An Interesting and Rare Charles II Oak Single Chair
Between the shaped carved and pierced cresting rail, and the run-moulded lower rail, is a most unusual centre panel, divided into a striking geometric design of 8 small panels, all with very intricately moulded edges, set around a raised rectangular central "boss".
The boarded seat sits on rails with a moulded bottom edge, and supported on very fine spirally turned legs, joined across the front by a superb twisted stretcher, which is also repeated on the side stretchers, and, most unusually, even the lower cross stretcher is twisted.
A good and rare example of a north country chair, with an excellent rich, dark patina.
Cheshire/Lancashire, circa 1680.
Height 39.5 inches, width across the seat 19 inches, depth 16 inches.
